Lolita's Personality

Lolita's care
For decades activists have been lobbying for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her hoped that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to sea.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her by putting her through head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, making her lose weight and harming her immune system. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member in a plan that would eventually take her to open waters. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast in which she could reside for the duration of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean itself not a concrete tank.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that bond with their family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. It is not clear what health issues are plaguing the orca, as her captor is not obliged to disclose this information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play an integral role in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite these ongoing health concerns Many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has pledged to transfer the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.
